Who would’ve thought that building a fence in the backyard would cause so much damage? This is the results of walking into a board while building a privacy fence in our backyard. We have being dealing with the aftermath for the last two years. The fence has never been finished either.
For most people walking into a board wouldn’t cause so much damage. You might get a headache or maybe a slight concussion. However, if you’ve had whole brain radiation it’s another story. When they do whole brain radiation it cause the brain to shrink ever so slightly. This means if you hit your head your brain moves more in your skull than someone who has not had whole brain radiation.
I do not recall ever being warning or any mention of the brain shrinking from radiation. Don’t get me wrong, he would have still went through the whole brain radiation to get rid of the cancer that covered his brain in less than two weeks. If he hadn’t he would not have survived. Had we known about the brain shrinking I would’ve made sure he was more careful. Accidents happen but most can be prevented with a little forethought.
When he walked into the board it caused his brain to slam into his skull. Thus causing two hematomas. One on each side of his brain. He has had several surgeries to drain the hematomas. The metal you see in the picture is covering the baseball size holes they drilled in his skull.
This only began a vicious cycle of not healing, infections, wash outs, and surgeries! Due to all the chemo he had to take he does not heal properly.
After several incisions pulled open they said he was low on protein. Therefore he wasn’t healing proper. That was over a year ago after his skin graph pulled apart. The bumped up skin next to the large hardware is what’s left of the skin graph.
He came into the hospital in February due to another infection on his brain. We have been here since. They say they can’t do a washout on him this time due to him not being able to heal. Since being admitted with the one issue he now has twenty-six others! Being admitted to the hospital should help a person heal but that hasn’t been the case for Chris.
Please, keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
